In art school, my teacher told us to draw with fat, chunky materials.
That’s right. No more pencils.
Grab a chunk of charcoal or a crayon or maybe even draw with your eraser on a smudgy mess.
And it was other things too.
Draw with your opposite hand. Draw a subject but don’t look at your paper. Crazy stuff that was super uncomfortable, especially for us perfectionists.
But of course, that was the point.
To get us out of our comfort zone, to draw and see in new ways and to stop fussing over tiny details that don’t even matter. In a nutshell, to dare to get better.
I’m so thankful for that lesson.
It’s one I try to hold onto as I design new theatre projections or really anything.
So in your own way, I’d love to encourage you to ‘pick up a clumsy chunk of charcoal and get to work.’
I think you’ll be surprised what you see. 😀
