Hamilton and In the Heights creator Lin Manuel Miranda

Love to See More of in Theatre?

This week on Behind the Curtain, we talk to Atlanta-based theatre director and college instructor Jarah Botello. Jarah discusses what she loves about modern theatre and how shows like ‘Hamilton’ and ‘Bright Star’ pave a way for diversity of expression.

This is part of a larger conversation with Mitch Stark, Founding Creative Director of Theatre Avenue. Theatre Avenue is a creative studio that focuses on producing digital projection backdrops for theatrical shows.

Video Length: 1:17 (1 minute, 17 seconds)

QUESTION: “What Would You Love to See More in Theatre?”

JARAH: “I think what I love and what I would just continue to love to see is different artists having the opportunity to express themselves in theatre. I think of Lin Manuel Miranda and his gift to write and to freestyle and his love for history and telling stories. How he’s just had the stage and the discipline to do that. To write Hamilton, to write Bring It On: The Musical or In the Heights.

I think I would just love to see more artists find their thing. He’s (Miranda) just so unique. I love when theatre doesn’t look the way it did 50 years ago. Or even Bright Star. We’ve been talking about that show a lot. It’s just unique. It’s a unique story. It’s bluegrass.

I would love to continue to see innovative, creative things come out.”
